Always On Time is a short documentary on the Hip Hop group Sekkond Hand and the story behind the new album “TIMELESS”
While most people love to hear the hip-hop genre from freestyle rap, boom bap, to trap music they often don’t know of the struggles behind making the music. Sekkond Hand, the hip-hop group, opens up about overcoming battles with cancer, addiction and their struggles as artists over the past twenty years.
Jamie Haage AKA “Av Murphy”, an underground hip-hop artist reveals the struggles he faced during many stages of his life.
At an early age Av Murphy was influenced by the hip hop culture writing graffiti, DJing and eventually studying the craft and becoming an MC. Av Murphy began experimenting with weed, liquor and LSD at an early age. AV Murphy began following the rave scene in New York City and Boston Massachusetts selling LSD at the raves. During which time he started mastering his craft freestyle rhyming over boom bap beats and techno music.
In the documentary Av Murphy talks about his transition from selling pills to abusing them which eventually lead to his full-blown addiction. In 2009 AV Murphy caught Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer which further accelerated his downward spiral.
In 2015 Av Murphy had received his third open heart surgery as a direct result of drug use. This was the turning point where in a Philadelphia hospital for four months he decided to start a new way of life.
Sekkond Hand has pre-released one of the tracks “TIMELESS” on Sound Cloud
Av Murphy and Bliz Balboa are longtime friends since 1996. For the past twenty years they have collaborated on numerous underground hip-hop mixtapes, albums and events. As teenagers they were in underground hip hop group called “Kapital Korruption”. This formed both their craft as artists and their bond as brothers.
In 1998 DJ Menace and Bliz Balboa formed Tha Addicts, Bliz and DJ Menace would record with such artists and producers as: Snoop Dogg, Killer Mike, MC Serch, Talib Kweli, Mims, Statik Selektah, DJ Eclipse, and KXNG Crooked aka “Crooked I”.
Tha Addicts had their song, “Look Back At Me” purchased by Trina (Slip N Slide Records). She would later be quoted saying, “Look Back At Me” is my biggest performance record to do live. People love it!!” However, Tha Addicts never received notoriety or credit for the record.
In 1999 Av Murphy met Splifout in their home town Newport, Rhode Island. The two met at darkflow studios. The two hit it off both for the love of the music and as artists. Rob Dorato aka “Spliftout” of Bangout Kingz Media was born in Newport RI. In 1990 Splif moved to Brooklyn NY to live with friends and pursue his love of producing hip hop. Eight years later he would continue to push the boundaries and move to Los Angeles. In 2000 he signed an artist deal with a subsidiary of Interscope but would later get a release due to artistic differences.
From then on Spliftout worked on his own independent projects. In 2006 Spliftout joined forces with multi-grammy award winner Stevie J and pro skateboarder and musician Danny Way to release “Tear Down the Walls” featuring Travis Barker on the drums. The song debuted on ESPN X Games that year as it featured Jake Brown describing his big slam at the X Games from the previous year. From there he worked with Stevie J on LHHATL season 3 as Music Supervisor.
During that time, he was producing an Album for artist and business partner BKLYN YAE who was later diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and died within 3 months. The duo had done records with a lot of NYC’s big names like Papoose, Uncle Murda, Lil Fame from M.O.P. and Tek from Smif n Wesson. It took a year or so to get back on track after that devastating loss. He produced a whole album for EVERYBODY LUV BLACK (#ELB) a group out of RI that was later recognized by DJ Premier and they are now in process of developing music with Premier.
In April of 2017 Spliftout joined forces with Sekkond Hand a group consisting of AV Murphy and Bliz Balboa and produced their debut album TIMELESS.
Sekkond Hand also has released a music video from their Mix Tape titled “Marked for Death”
